What is a magazine advert?

Magazine Advert Existing Analysis

Ruby's Analysis

Ellie Goulding - Lights

The album title 'Lights' has visuals within this advert as there are lights covering Goulding's hair. The light theme is continued as the font used looks like lights glowing. On the album there is also a song called 'lights'.

The image used on this advert is the image that is used on the actual CD cover. If people remembered the advert then they would be able to easily recognise the CD within stores
The image consists of a mid-shot of Goulding without direct eye contact with the camera. The image isdominant as it takes up most of the room on the page which makes Goulding stand out which will attract people who recognise her to look at the advert. The bottom half of the advert consists of the classic easy to read black and white designwhich features filled stars to make them stand out. The text features reviews from well known magazines/newspapers showing that the professionals are rating this album as something that is worth buying. It could be argued that the font used is more appealing to women due to the look of it, however this could be used because Goulding herself is a woman and she wanted to create afeminine feel to her advert.

Katy Perry - One of the Boys

The album is titled 'One of the Boys' but Perry does not look like she fits in with the boysas she looks very girly. This magazine advert follows the conventional aspects which are the name of the artist and album. In this case the artist's name is the dominant text, by it being in pink it shows her girly side which once again contradicts her being one of the boys.

The album title does not stand out, with the blue font it slightly dissolves into the blue sky background.
The digipak cover is featured on the magazine advert, house style is achieved between the two as both photos are taken in the same location; a back garden. This makes the album easily recognisable and memorable.

Within the digipak, the same font for the artist and title are used in the same colours giving even more house style and a brand imageThe look that Perry has gone for is a 50s style. The magazine advert uses the number one hit single as its main point of sale. release date for the album is clearly visible.

Beyonce - I am Sasha Fierce

The artist's name is the first piece of text that people will be drawn to when looking at this magazine advert. This is because it takes centre stage and it is in the largest font.
The most successful singles that have been released from the album are included on the advert so that if people like those songs they will feel encouraged to buy the whole album.
The idea of Beyonce being Sasha Fierce is shown by the two images whereby Beyonce transforms into Fierce. There is no use of star ratings and comments from critics/magazines which usually act as an encouragement and reassurance to that the album is good. The advert features the two alternative album covers of which are available, both photos give off a natural feel which looks similar to the photo of Beyonce rather than Sasha Fierce. The albums release date is clear.

Gwen Stefani - Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

The advert covers all the conventions with the artists name and album title being in the same font and being the most eye catching on the page. All the font is in yellow/gold which has house style with the background of the image. The image is not a photograph, instead it is a piece of art work. This advert was used in American magazines because it is being advertised as being sold in Target which is a American store therefore for other countries such as the UK, perhaps it would be advertised as being sold in HMV.

The song 'Rich Girl' is featured on the album, from the magazine adverts image it is clear to see that she is rich due to her clothes and the luxurious chair and crown which are featured. By the use of the font which is arguably gold in colour, it further shows her riches along with the fact that she has a painting of herself. The font is also a old style royal font. image of the album cover is featured on this advert which makes it easier for people to know what it looks like and therefore find it within stores quicker. The album covers artwork is similar to that of the magazine advert as it consists of the same painting but it is zoomed out so that there is more going on within the image. On the album cover we are able to see up to Stefani's knees and her having two girls either side of her. The same font that is used on the magazine is also used on the CD cover with a similar cover, creating house style between the two.

Choosing A Song and Analysis

Ruby

First verse: the feeling inside is the feeling which you get when you're with or thinking about the person you love, this feeling can be described as having butterflies in your tummy. Goulding is open about how she's not rich but if she was she would use it in order to get a big house for her and her partner to live in; she does this as her main priority rather than spending it on shoes and bags for herself.

It's a little bit funny
This feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money
But boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where
We both could live

Second verse: it is clear to see that Goulding is nervous about her love as she is rambling on about the detail of the colour of his eyes when all she wants to say is how sweet they are. She is that nervous that she can't concentrate on taking in the details of the colour of his eyes.

So excuse me forgetting
But these things I do
See I've forgotten if
They're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is
What I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Chorus: Goulding is proud of her love with this person because she is encouraging him to tell everybody and show her off. At the same time she hopes that he likes the song and doesn't mind that she is so open about how she feels about him. She wanted to tell her partner how much she loved him even though the song wasn't worth much in value, it came from her heart.

And you can tell everybody,
This is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

Third verse: Goulding comes up with the idea of being a sculptor but then thinks bad of the idea and dismisses it and changes it to a more exciting yet still creative idea. She feels like she isn't good enough for the partner although she is trying her best, for this reason she is doing what she is best at, song writing, rather than being something that she is not - a sculptor.

If I was a sculptor
But then again no
Or girl who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much but
It's the best I can do
My gift is my song and
This one's for you

Oh [x8]

And you can tell everybody
This is your song
It may be quite simple but
Now that it's done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is now you're in the world

The process of choosing a song was one of the hardest because it was hard knowing that which ever song we chose would be the basis of our grade. We wanted to choose a song which we both knew and liked, therefore we stayed away from genres that we are unfamiliar with e.g. rock.

Whilst listening to the song we had to imagine what our music video would look like. This then eliminated some possible songs that we had. We also had to be realistic, there would be no room for a full blown dance routine because we did not have the people to do this, we could not have things like giant letters or lights as we do not have the resources.

Once we chose a song, something that we had to avoid was copying the official video as we had both seen this, we did not want to be influenced by this. Our first idea was influenced by the official video as we copied the elements of her going on a journey (on a train) and her walking in fields.

When we had chose a song, we had to make sure that the possible people we were thinking of having in our video would fit the bill. For us, this meant having a female singer with the indie look.

Influences, Effects & Styles

Amie

Influence From Existing Media Products

To ensure my music video would appear authentic among professional videos within the industry I have spent plenty of hours looking at music videos through Youtube and iTunes  I have now collected an array of influential ideas. This has allowed me develop my own stylistic tastes. Some of the intriguing music videos that I have found have all had components which have really caught my eye and I have discussed a few below. I found that many music videos despite aiming to be individual and creating its own sense of style all have similar techniques behind them for example the use of extreme close up's to highlight expression. Many ideas that I have come up with have been influenced by the music videos I have seen which could contribute into my product having the same professional look.

Influences- This video clearly runs with a strong theme throughout and it's influences were The Great Gatsby and then it is obvious to see that all their ideas have run off that. This could be a way that Ruby and I can creatively plan for our music video if we take influence from a theme of something that way we can both come up with more concrete and valued ideas.
Effects- The effect throughout the video also compliment the era the video is supposed to be set in as they have made it look glowing and vintage. I also really like the sillouette look within the music video as you can see the orchestra playing I just think that it's very unique as I have not seen it before.
Style- What stands out in this music video to me is the very recognizable style of it. The 1920's art deco look is carried out throughout the entire video which co-insides with the movie it was made for- The Great Gatsby. All components of the music video from make up and costumes to genre makes the video it's own and as the audience you can feel that. Although my music video will not have the art deco look I admire the consistency of the video throughout it makes it a really bold piece and if I could get close to that within my music video then it would almost look as if it could exsist within the real world of music videos.

Influences- The approach of a dark story line has really made this music video and achieve nearly 70,000,000 hits on youtube. Although it does not directly co inside with the lyrics it does really compliment them and give them meaning by what the story of the visual images bring to the audience. Despite that this is not the sort of story line I wish to take up this video is a shining example of the relationship which must be developed within the lyrics and visuals to reach out to the audience.
Effects & Style- For some reason I am obsessed with the black and white effect as I think it looks so classy and gives a bold to certain images like her heavy eyes for example. I think this effect will work on my music video although it could destroy the brightness and vibrance of Camden Town and Brick Lane which is something that will contribute to the stylistic look of our music video although this effect could be considered for the ancillary tasks.
Influences- Chase and Status is one of the most strongest narratives I have ever seen within a music video it also includes performances alongside Delilah. It is one of the most out there videos I have seen which is actually allowed to be shown on youtube. It follows the story of a family where the mother suffers domestic abuse from the father and how it slowly effects them all. The fast past of the music and the shots really creates a strong relationship with the lyrics becoming really emotional attaching the audience even more which is something I would love to create within my own music video- raw emotion.
Effects- The performance throughout this video is a lot more interesting than most. You can see Delilah singing infront of a window with raining running down it- the reflection look. I think this is a really interesting concept and is a bit more original than someone just singing. Ruby and I have been struggling to come up with a performance setting maybe looking at videos like this will help us come up with a more interesting concept so our music video if put in the real multi media world would appeal more interesting to its audience.
Style- The style of the music video follows a family on their struggle with an alcoholic father and we watch graphic scenes of the mother suffering abuse. The style follows following the family around its normal surrounding especially of the house but does not have a specific out going style as the narrative is so strong it does not need a outgoing style to make interesting as the power of the plot does that by itself.

I want my video to look like it could easily be apart of the mass array of professional music videos that are already out their in the industry so to make sure of this I looked at a few of my favourite music videos to develop my own taste and find out what I like to conform to my own style although it would have influenced by others. The music video I have looked will be broken down just to document what I find inspirational as it could be implemented into my own music videos. At the beginning of the course I just began watching tones of music videos and the ones that stick out in my mind are predominantly indie and has a very unique and edgy style yet could be considered simplistic at the same time. The song Ruby and I have chosen screams indie so it would only be practical that I found influence from these videos which I have already looked at to ensure that it would convey to the expectations that a real music video has.

Influence of Gender on a Music Video
Amie

Men are presented in music videos as being superior to the women that surround them. They like to show off their wealth by featuring expensive clothing, cars and gadgets.

Amie
Media has reshaped reality in the way in which they present women within their music videos. They try and create a desirable effect in order to drive sales and generate interest. Stereotypically, women are sexualised within music video which would be hard to implement without music videos anyone as getting an actress of our similar age to feel comfortable doing that is very slim and we wouldn't want to do this within our music video anyway but with this approach dominating most of the market it was important to look at...

From burlesque girls to strippers most music videos especially within the rap industry as they try and cast the 'pimp and ho vibe'- videos always include a pole with girls prancing around in next to no clothes with cheeky fragmented body shots throughout. Without questioning it morality and the effect on children as they view their role models it clearly creates sales and interest otherwise record labels wouldn't do it- the old phrase 'sex sells' seems very apparent.

Ruby
Overall, the main use of women in music videos is generally for just their bodies and for the purpose of being accessories to men.

Performance Ideas
Completed by Amie and Ruby
Always on the look out for ideas, sitting there during the Chrtistmas holidays on youtube checking out new music I stumbled across Royals by Lorde. I really like the stylistic approach and although her performance piece throughout the video is quite simplistic it works which is something Ruby and I are struggling to do within our music video so when we get back I'll show her what I come found to see what she thinks! But this video proves that the performance within out music video does not have to be over the top with someone smashing up a guitar on the stage to make it look cool. Although we would need someone visually striking as the artist big curly hair and strong make up does make her stand out.

Rubys' Influences

Nicki Minaj - Pound the Alarm
The name of the song and the lyrics both do not have anything to do with the culture that is explored in the video. Funnily enough the only place that the lyrics mentions is Ibiza although the video is set in Trinidad. Minaj has used this upbeat song to make it go with the upbeat nature of the Trinidadian carnival. The dancing and the view of the people having a good time brings about a happy message from the exciting song. Minaj pays a tribute to her culture from the off start of the song as it starts with a steelpan version of the song, the dancers are in Trinidadian carnival attire. Minaj preforms with Tribagonian artists: Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons. Whilst wearing a Trinidadian flag designed bandana around her mouth she stands with her Trinidadian cousins. This song topped the US Hot Dance Club Songs as well as peaking at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number 14 on the US Pop Songs.

Black Eyed Peas - Where is the love

This song is very influential on its own but when it is combined with the video, the visuals help shape the message that is trying to be conveyed. The lyrics are very strong and pull on people's heart strings in the hope that they will think through their actions before following through with them.Serious issues such as murders, terrorism, racism and war are covered within this song.
These are covered by these lyrics: 'we try to stop terrorism but we still got terrorists here living'
- 'if you only have love for your own race then you only leave space to discriminate'
- 'nations droppin' bombs chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones' This is a more interesting way to address the issues as the younger generation are more likely to listen to music rather than watch the news. The music has incorporated the news to make more people listen, it seems to target young people due to the rapping nature of the song. The song became the biggest selling single of 2003 and the 25th best-selling single of the 2000s in the UK. Starting our story board our little minds went into overload when it where stressing about what the opening should actually be. Despite watching more videos in the past few months than I have done in my life time we were both stunned by the idea of actually making a decision. For reassurance we both decided that it seemed like the right thing go back and focus on opening shots to gather a range of styles and some information on how people within the professional industry do it in.
Influence, Effects & Styles of Ellie Goulding

Within Goulding's "How Long Will I Love You" video they started off with brief credits regarding who starred in the music video and reveal that it was all filmed on a Nokia Lumia 1020 phone. Then it started with an opening close up shot of her playing the piano. This is something we could use within out music video as Ruby especially has already researched into how instruments are filmed. We are introduced to her love interest as she is playing at the piano planning to write a song. This runs with our consistent theme throughout which has already been pre planned without being aware that this has already been done. Although within this video it is used just as a quick shot where as our narrative is based on this.

She begins 'Goodness Gracious' with establishing shots of the sea, sunset and palm trees in high vibrant colours. This song is different to the type of song we are doing so I do not wish really take this effect into consideration as it looks like it is more of a upbeat clubbing tune which is not something we wish to represent within our music video.

'Explosions' starts off with cool black and white shots on the train. This is something we may experiment with on our way to London when we head to Camden and Brick Lane. Our filming is being done on a Sunday so hopefully we will be able to find a not so busy carriage as this is one of the issues with filming up London the masses of people that are about.

Possible Artist Research
Ruby

As some basic research I looked at a few possible music artists who have songs that we could use for our music video. This is just general research as currently we have not decided on a song nor got someone to star in the video, therefore the artist is open to being male or female. I listened to a few of their most famous songs to hear the lyrics and watch the official video, if available, in order to gather up the information of the common elements they share.

Ellie Goulding- Your Song Music Video Analysis
Amie
Your Song was a ballad originally composed and performed by Elton John in 1970. Ellie Goulding re-released the single as part of album 'Bright Lights' 12th November 2010 and by Christmas appeared on all our screen as it was the soundtrack for the John Lewis Department Store Christmas TV advert. The music video was directed by Ben Coughlan and Max Knight, and premiered on Youtube on 14th November 2010. It managed to peak at Number 2 in the charts. The video has a homely look on Goulding's life with her friends and her journeys along the way. The single sold 755,326 copies in the UK alone.

Ellie Goulding stars in her own video, the personal video takes us back to her home town and the train station in Hereford. It was well received by the fans as it is personal to the artists and also develops her image. This is a good example of a collage type video which is used by many artists to give it a home video feel which is an effect that I would like to enforce within my music video.

--------------------------->
The atmosphere throughout seems very pure and introduces a country girl with many shots of Ellie in the park and all wrapped up in her winter gear always wrapped up warm connoting the cold weather perhaps making it feel christmassy explaining why John Lewis chose to use it (video as shown below). Using it for the Christmas video implies and enforces the homely feel that this song provides and the feeling that it gives someone who is listening to it. The shots of her and friends indicate a trip out almost as if they are filming a memory making the home video look appear and feel very sentimental. The images connote Ellie's values such as the importance of friendship highlight that is what life is about and that is what makes you happy as we often find shots of her grinning and laughing throughout the video.

The calming tempo of the music creates a relationship with the visual of nature conveying a peaceful setting. The characters outfits proves that Ellie is just a down to earth girl like everyone except the lyrics of the song highlights that she still has the gift of song and it is something that she is able to share. She expressed pure happiness throughout and a love of music as she consistently plays piano creating a soothing atmosphere and her portraying her love of music throughout.

This video in particular does not include an introduction although many do but then the narrative is not overly exhaustive. However the setting does set the tone and mood telling the story of the song. The relationship between the artist and the lyrics of this song can be left to you imagination as it does not overly have a distinctive story line. Although there are now connotations such as 'travelling' which could suggest a journey but here it takes us back Ellie's routes before she was famous as she visits her home town as we quickly see the station sign of 'Hereford' although it is not obvious it remains personal as she shares her life with her fans. Moreover "my gift is my song" expresses that this song shows the artists voice off and this is the gift. The association with gifts also would again have made it perfect for the John Lewis TV Ad. The director does use cuts but it is not faced passed as the tempo matches the music also unlike Andrew Goodwin's focus on voyeurism this is not included within this video at all it remains very authentic and pure.

The action shot below is although very simple adds a great stylistic feature a represents her on a travelling journey. This type of shot with my own spin on I will 100% try to use within my own video as I really like the way it looks and the effect it has on the story. It almost feels that she is taking her audience on her journey too. The personal touch to this video is definitely what makes it so special and warming.

In the build up to the chorus the viewers are still met with home made videos enhancing the idea of memories giving the audience a insight to her personal life as she develops her image as an artist but also what she is like in her personal life. The lens flare throughout almost accentuates the memories that she is capturing. The collage feel I also love it is used by many artists including Lana Del Rey. I believe it is a cheap yet effective way of the institutions to make music videos. It differs from your traditional rock and roll sort of themed video. A sense of peace is created as nature has a big part to play throughout the entire video and shots of her paddling in the lake with her wellies on. The enhanced colours throughout highlight the pretty side of nature making it only seem more beautiful.

Goodwin's theory is also exemplified here there are so many close up shots of Ellie Goulding throughout her video as there is a clear desire for her to be seen which is wanted by the audience as they wish to feel up close and intimate to their favourite star. This in turn makes an effective performance which is perhaps something to be considered when making my own video as it is also evident within other music video for example Miley Cyrus- Wrecking Ball.

The progression of the video continues with her story and we are presented with our star as a very warmly and down to earth kind of girl as she is sitting on the sofa with her cat having a cuppa. This although reflects normal life of many people I chose to analysis this video as in the music video spectrum there actually is not much that you could compare it with it as it is a very unusual feel as its not raunchy or looking for attention its very stripped back and raw which is actually why I think it was so popular. It was so well received and taken well as it was easy watching and aproppriate for all as many videos now days are not suitable for children and many adults in particular are annoyed with what there children are being exposed. The song is a great cover and the video is absolutely beautiful.

Contact With Our Artist

Although with a slim chance of any replies we thought we should try and contact our artist through social media! It would be worth a shot and fun if we did get a reply but what we say stars are generally just to busy these days! Here is a couple ways we tried to contact her!

Our Artist Live

On 9th March 2014, Ruby & I have booked to see Ellie Goulding perform live at London's O2 arena- got to have fun alongside the coursework. But it would be a good idea to see just what she is like as an artist and focus on costumes, graphics etc to see if they match close up to anything we did within our music video even though our schedule is set before then.

 Meeting Ellie Goulding

I was lucky enough to meet Ellie Goulding whilst working at The Britt Awards. It was an amazing experience as you got to see her on a personal basis. It was good to meet her as I was able to evaluate her style, attitude which is something I could include with the planning stages as I have now had first had experiences of her interests.

Biography

Ellie Goulding's biography found on her website describes her as:

"Never likely to be one of those singers who is content just to turn up, lay down a main vocal part and leave, Ellie’s approach to writing and recording is, she admits, borderline obsessive – but then, anything less, she says, would be a waste of time."
Goulding's voice is distinctive, similar to that of Jake Bugg, this can play an important role in her songs.
The new record Halcyon is about a journey out of heartache towards hope. The hope consists of the main highlights in her life, some of these are a Brit award, the release of Lights, writer's block, singing at the White House and a number one pop record that has done over 3m in America. In April 2011 when the Royal Wedding took place in London, Goulding sung at the party at Buckingham Palace following the wedding reception. She sang a selection of her own songs and cover versions (including tracks by Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Elton John). In America, her single 'Lights' stayed on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart for 35 weeks.  Halycon is a redemptive album which gives the idea of lessons learnt and the adventures that Goulding is able to go on. Goulding's website also describes her as:

"Honest and self-aware enough to endure and acknowledge her propensity for what she herself calls "over-thinking"; brave enough to confront this and go into battle again' and possessed of a talent, and a voice, of such extraordinary power that, for all her vulnerability, you sense that, deep down, Ellie Goulding knows she is impregnable".

Music Style

Goulding has a vocal range of a soprano and is well know for her high piercing vibrati, breathy tone and emotive delivery. Neil McComick of The Daily Telegraph described her voice as 'something special'. Her voice conveys a childlike wonder with darker tones- a truly original tone full of emotion.
Her voice has been compared to Dolly Parton by Will Hermes of Rolling Stones.
Goulding's debut album Lights in 2010 experiences with different genres such as indie pop, synthpop, folktronica and indietronic. The second album Halcyon followd a similar style yet she stepped aeay a more electronic sound moving to a more tribal sound.
She has a wide range of interests including R&B, electronica, heavy metal, folk, hip hop, pop and classical. Her musical influences are Beyonce, Bjork, Florence & The Machine, Imogen Heap, Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Owl City. She also is very much into rappers such as Kanye West, Drake and Nicki Minaj.
